Working with a Menopause Coach: is it right for you?

Updated: Jul 17

Menopause Coach Jane Mackay

If you've been wondering whether working with a menopause coach could help you feel more like yourself again, this guide explains what menopause coaching involves, who it's for, what it costs and how it can support you through one of life's biggest transitions.

If you've spent hours searching online, tried supplements, listened to podcasts, spoken to friends and perhaps even visited your GP several times...but still feel unsure what to do next, you aren't alone.

One of the biggest challenges during perimenopause and menopause isn't the lack of information.

It's the sheer amount of it.

One article tells you to lift weights. Another tells you to eat more protein.

Someone on social media swears by a supplement.

Your GP recommends HRT. A friend tells you to avoid it.

It can leave you wondering...

"Where do I even start?"

That's where working with a menopause coach can make all the difference.

Rather than giving you another generic checklist, a menopause coach helps you understand your symptoms, your priorities and your options, creating a personalised plan that works for your life.

What is a Menopause Coach?

A Menopause Coach is a trained professional who uses their expertise to guide clients through the menopause transition, helping them make lifestyle and health changes that improve menopause symptoms, confidence and future health and wellbeing.

Unlike a medical appointment, coaching gives you the time and space to look at the bigger picture.

Together you might explore:

  • your symptoms

  • nutrition

  • movement and exercise

  • sleep and rest

  • stress and emotional wellbeing

  • lifestyle habits

  • medical treatment options

  • preparing for GP or specialist appointments

  • building confidence and resilience

Every woman experiences menopause differently.

That's why coaching should never be a one-size-fits-all approach.

My role isn't to tell you what to do; it's to help you understand your options, make informed decisions and feel supported every step of the way.

Who is menopause coaching for?

You don't need to be experiencing severe symptoms to benefit from menopause coaching.

Many women come to me because they simply feel stuck.

Menopause coaching may be right for you if you:

✔ You're overwhelmed by conflicting advice.

✔ You're unsure whether HRT is right for you.

✔ You're struggling with fatigue, brain fog or anxiety.

✔ You want practical lifestyle guidance.

✔ You feel dismissed or unsupported.

✔ You simply want someone to help you join the dots.

From newly perimenopausal to well beyond your final period, coaching can help you make sense of what you're experiencing.

How is a menopause coach different from your GP?

This is one of the questions I'm asked most often.

The two roles are very different, but they complement each other beautifully.

Your GP diagnoses medical conditions, prescribes medication and discusses treatment options.

A menopause coach helps you understand how menopause is affecting your day-to-day life and supports you in making practical changes that improve your wellbeing.

A coaching session gives us time to explore your concerns in depth.

Together we can discuss:

  • your symptoms and how they affect daily life

  • nutrition and lifestyle changes

  • stress management

  • emotional wellbeing

  • workplace challenges

  • questions to ask your GP

  • how to prepare for medical appointments

  • the evidence behind different treatment options

I often help clients feel more confident before speaking to their GP because they have a clearer understanding of their symptoms, priorities and preferences.

There are 13 million women in the UK in perimenopause or menopause yet there is such a disconnect between our healthcare needs and the care we receive from our broken National Health Service.

A study by the Newson Health Menopause Clinic of 6,000 women found that almost a third of women had between two and five medical appointments before their symptoms were diagnosed as linked to the perimenopause and menopause and that 1 in 10 were forced to sit through between six and ten appointments before getting their diagnosis.

Two in five women were offered antidepressants.

Despite the significant impact of the hormonal changes on our physical and emotional wellbeing, many women find themselves navigating the menopause alone.

This highlights the need for specialist menopause wellness support beyond overburdened healthcare professionals.

A Menopause Coach offers targeted, evidence-informed guidance that bridges the gap.

I stay up to date with the latest menopause research and collaborate with trusted health professionals to ensure my clients receive the best possible menopause care.

My approach to menopause coaching

Everything I do is built around what I call the Five Foundations of Menopause Health.

These foundations recognise that menopause affects far more than our hormones.

Nourishment

Together we'll look at simple nutrition strategies that support your body, energy levels and long-term health.

Movement

We'll explore realistic ways to become more active, improve strength and support your bones, muscles and heart.

Sleep and Rest

Poor sleep can affect almost every menopause symptom.

We'll identify practical ways to improve your sleep and create more opportunities for rest and recovery.

Emotional Wellbeing

Menopause can affect confidence, relationships, work and mental wellbeing.

We'll explore ways to build resilience, reduce overwhelm and create healthier boundaries.

Understanding Your Options

We'll discuss the full range of support available to you, including lifestyle approaches, medical treatments such as HRT where appropriate, complementary therapies, workplace support and how to access trusted healthcare professionals.

What happens during a coaching session?

Every session is completely personalised.

Before we meet, you'll complete a health questionnaire so I understand your symptoms, health history and what you'd most like help with.

During your session we'll:

  • explore your biggest challenges

  • identify what may be contributing to your symptoms

  • discuss practical solutions

  • look at your treatment and support options where appropriate

  • create realistic next steps

Afterwards, you'll receive a written summary of everything we've discussed, together with personalised recommendations, resources and signposting, so you don't have to remember it all.

My aim is that you leave feeling informed, reassured and clear about what to do next.

Does menopause coaching actually work?

Coaching offers something many women tell me they've been missing:

Time. Space. Someone who listens. Someone who understands.

Someone who helps them create a plan that feels achievable.

One client described our session like this:

"Your knowledge and compassion shine through! You made me feel at ease and open to your suggestions. I definitely felt you had considered me and your recommendations were achievable and therefore very helpful."

Another said:

"My session with Jane was amazing, more than I ever expected. Jane has so much knowledge that you don't find online."

For many women, simply feeling heard is the first step towards feeling better.

How much does menopause coaching cost?

The cost of menopause coaching varies depending on the level of support you need.

Some women benefit from a single Menopause Clarity Session, which provides a personalised action plan and practical next steps.

Others choose ongoing support over several weeks for additional accountability and encouragement while making changes.

It's also worth knowing that coaching doesn't always have to be self-funded!

Some employers now provide menopause coaching as part of their wellbeing programmes.

Depending on where you live, support may also be available through government-funded health, wellbeing or employability services such as WorkWell.

If you're unsure which option would suit you best, I'm always happy to talk through the different possibilities.

Why I became a Menopause Coach

After spending many years working in the legal sector whilst raising my two sons, I experienced first-hand how stress, burnout and perimenopause can affect every aspect of life.

Like many women, I found myself searching for answers.

That experience inspired me to retrain as a Menopause Health Practitioner and Coach, combining professional training with lived experience to support other women through this stage of life.

Today, I work with women across the UK online and also provide workplace menopause support for organisations and funded employment programmes.

My goal has always been simple:

To help women feel informed, supported and confident about their menopause health.

Ready to feel more in control of your menopause?

You don't have to work everything out on your own.

If you're looking for practical, personalised and evidence-informed support, my Menopause Clarity Session is designed to help you understand your symptoms, explore your options and create a plan that's tailored to you.
