top 5 natural deodorants for menopause

If you're in perimenopause or menopause and you've found yourself wondering, "Why do I suddenly smell different?" you're certainly not alone.

One of the most unexpected menopause symptoms is a change in body odour.

Even women who have never worried about sweating before can suddenly notice stronger underarm odour, more perspiration and deodorants that no longer seem to work.

You're not imagining it, and you don't just have to put up with it!

In this guide I'll explain why menopause affects body odour, what to look for in a natural deodorant and the five products I recommend most for menopausal women.

Why Does Menopause Change Your Body Odour?

If you've noticed that your body odour has changed during perimenopause or menopause, you're not imagining it and you're certainly not alone.

Many women tell me they're suddenly finding that their usual deodorant no longer works, they're sweating more than they ever have before, or they're noticing a stronger underarm smell even after showering.

It can feel embarrassing, but it's actually a very common symptom of the hormonal changes that happen during midlife.

Falling Oestrogen Affects Your Body's Thermostat

One of the main reasons for increased sweating during menopause is the decline in oestrogen.

Oestrogen plays an important role in regulating your body's internal temperature. As hormone levels fluctuate, your brain can mistakenly think you're overheating, triggering hot flushes and increased sweating to try to cool you down.

This means you may sweat more often, even when the room isn't particularly warm or you're not exercising.

Sweat Doesn't Smell, Bacteria Does

Here's something that surprises many women: sweat itself is virtually odourless.

The smell develops when sweat mixes with the naturally occurring bacteria that live on your skin. These bacteria break down proteins and fats in your sweat, producing the compounds responsible for body odour.

During menopause, hormonal changes can alter both the amount you sweat and the balance of bacteria on your skin, making body odour more noticeable than it used to be.

Stress Can Make It Worse

Many women experience increased stress, anxiety or overwhelm during menopause. Unfortunately, stress can also make body odour worse.

When you're stressed, your body releases sweat from apocrine glands, which are found mainly in the underarms and groin. This type of sweat contains more proteins and fats than the sweat produced to cool you down, giving skin bacteria more to break down and creating a stronger odour.

If you've ever noticed you smell different during a stressful meeting or difficult day, there's a biological reason for it.

Changes to Your Skin

Lower oestrogen levels also affect your skin. It often becomes drier, thinner and more sensitive during menopause, meaning products you've happily used for years may suddenly start causing irritation or simply stop performing as well.

This is one reason many women begin looking for gentler, natural deodorants that provide effective odour protection without irritating sensitive skin.

It's Not Just About Deodorant

While finding the right deodorant can make a huge difference to your confidence, it's important to remember that body odour is often a sign of wider changes happening inside your body.

Factors such as your diet, hydration, stress levels, sleep, gut health and overall hormonal changes can all influence how much you sweat and even how your sweat smells. That's why I always encourage women to look beyond simply masking the odour and instead support their health more holistically.

If you'd like to learn more about the everyday habits that can support your body during menopause, you might also enjoy my guide to the foundations of menopause health, where I explain the simple lifestyle changes that can make a real difference to how you feel.

Why Some Deodorants Suddenly Stop Working During Menopause

"I've used the same deodorant for years… why has it suddenly stopped working?"

It's a question I hear surprisingly often, and the answer usually isn't that the deodorant has changed, it's that your body has.

As your hormones fluctuate during perimenopause and menopause, the way you sweat changes too. You may find you're sweating more frequently, your body temperature feels harder to regulate, or your sweat has a stronger odour than it did before.

These changes can mean that a deodorant which worked perfectly in your 30s or 40s no longer keeps you feeling fresh all day.

Your Sweat May Be Different

During menopause, hormone changes can increase both the amount you sweat and the type of sweat your body produces.

Hot flushes, night sweats and stress-related sweating all become more common, giving odour-causing bacteria more opportunity to thrive.

Some women also notice that they need to reapply deodorant during the day when they never had to before.

Your Skin Becomes More Sensitive

Lower oestrogen levels don't just affect your hormones, they also affect your skin.

As the skin becomes thinner and drier, it may react differently to ingredients that have never caused problems in the past. Alcohol-based sprays, heavily fragranced products or deodorants containing harsh ingredients can suddenly sting, itch or leave your underarms feeling irritated.

That's one reason many menopausal women choose natural deodorants with nourishing ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil or magnesium, which are often gentler on sensitive skin.

Deodorant vs Antiperspirant – What's the Difference?

It's also worth understanding the difference between a deodorant and an antiperspirant, as they're designed to do different jobs.

A deodorant helps neutralise or prevent body odour by reducing the bacteria that cause unpleasant smells, while allowing your body to sweat naturally.

An antiperspirant, on the other hand, contains aluminium salts that temporarily reduce the amount you sweat by blocking the sweat glands.

Neither option is inherently "better", it depends on your symptoms and personal preferences. If your biggest concern is body odour, a good natural deodorant may be all you need. If you're experiencing very heavy sweating that's affecting your confidence or daily life, you may prefer an antiperspirant or wish to discuss other treatment options with your GP.

Finding the Right Product May Take a Little Trial and Error

Just as there's no one-size-fits-all approach to menopause, there's no single deodorant that works for everyone.

The best deodorant for menopausal women is one that suits your skin, your lifestyle and the way your body responds to hormonal changes. You may find you need a different formula than you used before menopause, and that's completely normal.

The good news is that there are now some excellent natural deodorants available in the UK that are specifically well suited to women experiencing increased sweating, body odour and sensitive skin during menopause. Below, I've shared five of my favourites and what makes each one stand out.

What to Look for in the Best Deodorant for Menopausal Women

With so many deodorants on the market, it can be difficult to know which one is most likely to work for you. While there's no single "perfect" product, there are a few features worth looking out for if you're experiencing menopause-related sweating, body odour or sensitive skin.

Aluminium-Free or Antiperspirant?

One of the biggest decisions is whether to choose a natural deodorant or an antiperspirant.

Natural deodorants don't stop you from sweating. Instead, they work by neutralising the bacteria that cause body odour, helping you stay fresh while allowing your body's natural cooling system to do its job.

Antiperspirants contain aluminium salts, which temporarily reduce the amount you sweat by blocking the sweat glands.

Some women prefer aluminium-free deodorants because they're gentler on sensitive skin or simply because they want to avoid unnecessary ingredients. Others find that an antiperspirant gives them the confidence they need if heavy sweating is their biggest concern.

Current research has not shown a proven link between aluminium in deodorants and breast cancer, despite common myths online. Ultimately, the right choice is the one that works best for your body and your personal preferences.

Gentle Ingredients for Sensitive Skin

As hormone levels decline, many women notice their skin becomes drier, thinner and more easily irritated.

If this sounds familiar, look for deodorants made with moisturising ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil or cocoa butter. Products that are free from alcohol and formulated for sensitive skin are often less likely to sting or cause irritation after shaving.

If you know you react to fragrances or essential oils, you may also prefer an unscented option.

Ingredients That Help Fight Odour Naturally

Many natural deodorants now use ingredients that help tackle body odour without relying on harsh chemicals.

Some of the most effective:

  • Magnesium hydroxide helps neutralise odour-causing bacteria while being gentle on sensitive skin.

  • Arrowroot powder or tapioca starch absorbs moisture and help keep underarms feeling dry.

  • Probiotics and prebiotics supports a healthy balance of bacteria on the skin.

  • Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) is very effective at controlling odour but can sometimes irritate sensitive skin, so it isn't suitable for everyone.

Consider Sustainability Too

If you're switching deodorants anyway, it's also worth thinking about the environmental impact of the products you buy.

Many of today's leading natural deodorant brands offer refillable cases, recyclable packaging and vegan, cruelty-free formulations. While sustainability may not be your top priority, it's a welcome bonus if you can reduce plastic waste while finding a product that works well.

The Best Deodorant Is the One That Works for You

Every woman's menopause experience is different, so there isn't a single deodorant that's right for everyone.

Some women prioritise maximum protection against body odour, while others are looking for a gentle formula for sensitive skin or a refillable option that's kinder to the environment.

The products I've included below are all popular choices for menopausal women in the UK, but each has different strengths. Hopefully, my reviews will help you decide which one is most likely to suit your needs.

Deodorant isn't the whole answer

Finding a deodorant that works can make a huge difference to your confidence, but it's important to remember that deodorant is only treating the symptom, not the underlying changes happening in your body.

Menopause affects far more than your hormones. It can influence how much you sweat, the balance of bacteria on your skin, your stress levels, your sleep, your gut health and even how your body responds to certain foods. All of these factors can play a role in body odour.

That's why I encourage women to think about their health more holistically rather than relying on a single product to solve the problem.

Small Lifestyle Changes Can Make a Big Difference

While every woman's experience is different, many find that a few simple lifestyle changes can help reduce sweating and improve overall wellbeing during menopause.

These include:

  • Eating a balanced diet rich in whole foods and adequate protein.

  • Staying well hydrated throughout the day.

  • Limiting alcohol and spicy foods if you notice they trigger hot flushes or increased sweating.

  • Managing stress through relaxation, mindfulness or gentle movement.

  • Prioritising good quality sleep wherever possible.

  • Wearing breathable natural fabrics such as cotton or bamboo to help your body stay cool.

These changes won't stop menopause, but they can help support your body and may make symptoms easier to manage.

Build Strong Foundations

I often describe these habits as the Foundations of good Menopause Health.

There's no miracle supplement, no single 'menopause food' and no one product that works for everyone. Instead, it's the small, consistent habits that often have the greatest impact over time.

When should you speak to your GP?

Although increased sweating and changes in body odour are common during perimenopause and menopause, they shouldn't automatically be put down to hormones.

If your symptoms are having a significant impact on your quality of life, it's worth speaking to your GP.

There may be treatments or lifestyle changes that could help, including hormone replacement therapy (HRT), if it's suitable for you.

You should also seek medical advice if you experience:

  • Sudden or severe sweating that doesn't seem related to hot flushes.

  • Night sweats that are persistent, drenching or accompanied by a fever.

  • Unexplained weight loss or ongoing fatigue.

  • A sudden change in body odour that's unusual for you or doesn't improve despite good hygiene.

  • Skin changes such as persistent rashes, lumps or sores under your arms.

  • Sweating that starts after beginning a new medication or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms.

It's important to remember that while menopause is a common cause of increased sweating, other conditions such as thyroid disorders, infections, diabetes and some medications can also affect how much you sweat or change your body odour. Your GP can help rule out other causes if needed.

Most importantly, don't feel that you have to simply "put up with it."

If menopause symptoms are affecting your confidence, sleep, work or everyday life, you deserve support. There are many options available, and finding the right combination of medical advice, lifestyle changes and practical strategies can make a real difference.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the best deodorant for menopausal women?

The best deodorant for menopausal women depends on your individual symptoms and preferences.

If your main concern is body odour, a natural deodorant containing ingredients such as magnesium or probiotics may work well. If you're experiencing heavy sweating that affects your daily life, you may prefer an antiperspirant, which helps reduce the amount you sweat.

The products featured in this guide have all been chosen because they're popular with women experiencing menopause and are gentle on sensitive skin.

Why do I suddenly smell different during menopause?

Many women notice changes in body odour during perimenopause and menopause because falling oestrogen levels affect the body's temperature regulation and can increase sweating.

Hormonal changes can also alter the balance of bacteria on your skin, making body odour more noticeable. The good news is that this is a common symptom of menopause, and there are plenty of ways to manage it.

Does menopause cause body odour?

Yes, it can. Menopause doesn't directly create body odour, but it can increase sweating and change the way your body responds to heat and stress. When sweat mixes with naturally occurring bacteria on your skin, it produces the characteristic odour many women notice during menopause.

Lifestyle factors, stress and diet can also influence body odour.

Is natural deodorant better during menopause?

Not necessarily, it's a personal choice. Many women prefer natural deodorants because they're free from aluminium salts and often contain ingredients that are gentler on sensitive skin. Others find that an antiperspirant works better if excessive sweating is their biggest concern.

The best option is the one that helps you feel comfortable and confident.

Can diet affect menopause body odour?

Yes, your diet may play a role.

Foods such as spicy meals, alcohol and large amounts of caffeine can trigger hot flushes or increase sweating in some women. Staying well hydrated and eating a balanced diet rich in whole foods may help support your overall health during menopause.

While diet isn't the only factor, it can form part of a holistic approach to managing symptoms.

Why does stress make menopause sweating worse?

Stress activates your body's "fight or flight" response, causing your sweat glands to produce a different type of sweat that's richer in proteins and fats.

When bacteria on your skin break this sweat down, it can produce a stronger body odour. Because many women experience increased stress and anxiety during menopause, managing stress through relaxation techniques, regular movement or mindfulness may also help reduce sweating.

How long does menopause body odour last?

Some women only notice changes during perimenopause, while others experience them for several years after menopause.

As hormone levels settle, symptoms often improve, although everyone's experience is different. If body odour changes are persistent, severe or accompanied by other symptoms, it's always worth speaking to your GP.

Can hormone replacement therapy (HRT) help with sweating?

HRT can be one of the most effective treatments for reducing hot flushes and night sweats because it replaces the oestrogen that's declining during menopause. It's important to discuss the benefits and potential risks with your GP or menopause specialist.

More Support

Finding the best deodorant for menopause can make a real difference to your confidence, but it's only one part of supporting your body through this stage of life.

Changes in body odour often reflect the wider hormonal changes happening during menopause, which is why I always encourage women to look beyond products alone.

By supporting your nutrition, sleep, stress levels and overall health, many women find they feel fresher, more comfortable and more like themselves again.
