Have you looked in the mirror and wondered why your hair suddenly doesn't feel like you anymore?
It’s thinner than it used to, lacks volume, feels drier, or simply refuses to behave the way it once did.
You might even be wondering if your current hairstyle still suits you.
If any of this sounds familiar, you're certainly not alone!

As a Menopause Wellness Practitioner and Coach, one of the questions I'm asked surprisingly often isn't about HRT or hot flushes...it's about hair.
Women tell me they no longer recognise their hair. It's thinner, more brittle, doesn't hold a style and has lost the body it once had.
While getting older naturally affects our hair, the hormonal changes of perimenopause and menopause can accelerate those changes, leaving many women wondering whether it's time for a different style.
The good news is that there isn't one "right" hairstyle for women over 50. In fact, one of the biggest myths I'd like to challenge is the idea that women should automatically cut their hair short once they reach a certain age!
Some women look incredible with a soft pixie, while others suit long, flowing layers or a textured bob.
The best hairstyle is the one that works for your hair, your lifestyle and your personality.
In this guide, I'll share five of my favourite hairstyles for women over 50, along with practical advice on choosing the right cut, why your hair may have changed in midlife, and what I've learned about transitioning to grey through grey blending.
I'll also point you towards some of my favourite hairstylists and resources, so you can head to your next salon appointment feeling informed and inspired.

Why Does Hair Change During Menopause?
Many women assume that changing hair is simply part of getting older. While age certainly plays a role, menopause often has a much bigger impact than people realise.
As oestrogen levels begin to decline during perimenopause and menopause, it's common to notice changes in both the appearance and condition of your hair.
You may find that it feels finer than it used to, lacks volume, becomes drier or more brittle, or doesn't seem to grow as quickly. Some women also notice increased hair shedding or thinning, particularly around the temples or parting.
These changes can feel upsetting, especially if you've always loved your hair or taken pride in how it looks.
Hair is closely linked to our confidence and identity, so it's completely understandable to feel frustrated when it no longer behaves the way it once did.
The encouraging news is that you're not powerless! While we can't stop the natural ageing process, there are plenty of ways to support healthy hair during midlife.
A flattering haircut can make a huge difference to your confidence, but it's only one piece of the menopause wellness puzzle.
Hair health is influenced by everything from nutrition and sleep to stress, movement and hormone changes.
If you'd like to understand how these different areas work together, I've created The 5 Foundations of Menopause Health where I bring together all of the key pillars that support women through the menopause.
That's why I always encourage women to think beyond the haircut itself. A beautiful style will certainly help you feel more confident, but looking after your hair from the inside out is just as important.
If you're concerned about thinning hair, increased shedding or changes in texture, you may also find my guide helpful 'Healthy Menopause Hair: The Top 10 Resources'. It covers some of my favourite products, nutritional support and practical strategies to help keep your hair looking and feeling its best throughout menopause.
The Top 5 Hairstyles for Women Over 50
1. Long Hair: Timeless and Elegant

Long hair can be incredibly flattering for women over 50, especially when it’s healthy, well-shaped, and thoughtfully styled.
Rather than weighing you down, a long cut with soft layers around the face adds movement and frames your features beautifully.
It’s a style that works particularly well for those with naturally thick or straight hair, though wavy textures can look equally stunning with the right layering.
The key is regular trims and a shape that enhances, rather than overwhelms, your face.
Jennifer Lopez has made long, layered hair her signature.
Her stylist often adds face-framing layers and soft highlights to keep the look fresh and modern, not overly “done.”
Similarly, Demi Moore’s sleek, centre-parted hair proves that long locks can look sophisticated and powerful well into your 50s and beyond.
Pro Tip: Ask your stylist to incorporate subtle internal layers rather than heavy outer layers.
This gives movement without losing length or volume, making it easier to maintain and style day-to-day.
A high-quality shine serum can also elevate the overall look.
2. Pixie Cut: Modern and Chic (Without the ‘Spiky Back’)

A pixie cut can be a liberating and stylish choice, offering ease and elegance in one.
The trick is to avoid the overly structured, spiky-back style that can unintentionally age the look.
Instead, opt for a modern pixie with soft, feathered layers and gentle texture.
This creates movement around the crown and face, making it flattering for different face shapes and hair types.
Pixie hairstyles for women over 50 can look effortlessly youthful when they lean toward softness and natural flow.
Actor Michelle Williams knows how to perfect the softer pixie look.
By keeping the back tapered but not severe, and adding volume at the crown, the overall effect is stylish without being harsh.
It’s a fantastic choice for women with fine or thinning hair because it creates the illusion of volume.
Pro Tip: Use a lightweight texturising cream rather than a stiff gel.
This enhances the natural flow of the cut and allows for easy restyling between washes.
Regular trims (every 4–6 weeks) will keep the shape sharp and fresh.
3. Medium Length: The Chic Shag

The modern shag haircut has made a huge comeback, and for good reason; it’s stylish, low-maintenance, and works with a variety of hair textures.
A medium-length 'chic shag' is perfect for women over 50 who want movement without fuss.
Its layered structure adds body and softness, while curtain bangs or face-framing layers can enhance cheekbones and soften jawlines.
If your hair is wavy, straight or somewhere in between, this cut grows out beautifully and doesn’t demand constant salon visits.
Actresses like Meg Ryan have shown how a modern shag can bring life and personality to medium-length hair.
With a bit of tousling and light styling, it looks intentionally “undone” in the most flattering way.
Pro Tip: Use a volumising mousse on damp hair and scrunch as you dry to enhance texture.
A shag cut really shines when you embrace a bit of natural movement rather than aiming for perfect smoothness.
4. Layered Bob: Classic with a Contemporary Twist

The layered bob remains one of the best hairstyles for women over 50 because of its adaptability.
Hitting anywhere between the chin and shoulders, this cut combines structure with softness.
The layers add shape and volume, making it ideal for fine or thinning hair, while the bob length gives a clean, polished finish.
It works beautifully with straight or slightly wavy hair, and can be styled sleek or with added texture for a more casual look.
Viola Davis often opts for variations of the layered bob, proving its timeless appeal.
A slight undercurve at the ends creates a flattering frame for the face, while layers around the crown prevent the look from feeling heavy.
Pro Tip: Blow-dry with a round brush to add bounce at the roots, then finish with a light texturising spray for a natural finish.
If you have fine hair, ask your stylist to keep the layers subtle to avoid removing too much volume.
5. Textured Lob: Effortlessly Modern

The textured lob (long bob) is the ultimate in understated chic.
Falling between the collarbone and shoulders, it’s long enough to tie back but short enough to feel fresh and modern.
Textured ends give this style movement and prevent it from feeling flat, a common concern for midlife hair.
It’s one of the most versatile hairstyles for women over 50, suiting straight, wavy, or even curly hair.
Think of women like Naomi Watts or Sandra Bullock, who often wear a softly textured lob with loose waves.
It’s elegant but never fussy, and it transitions effortlessly from day to night.
Pro Tip: For a quick everyday style, twist damp hair into a loose bun and let it dry naturally.
This creates soft, natural waves that emphasise the texture without heat styling.
Regular micro-trims will keep the ends healthy and the shape crisp.
Thinking About Going Grey? Why Grey Blending Could Be the Perfect Middle Ground
For many women, one of the biggest hair decisions in midlife isn't choosing a new haircut...it's deciding what to do about their colour.
Some women love covering their grey and are happy to keep up with regular salon appointments. Others decide they're ready to embrace their natural silver. Neither choice is right or wrong; it's simply about what feels right for you.
Personally, I found the transition much harder than I expected.
After years of colouring my hair, I reached the point where I wanted something that felt more natural and required less frequent maintenance. What I quickly discovered, though, was that grey blending is a specialist skill. Not every hairdresser offers it, and not everyone understands how to create a soft, seamless transition between coloured hair and your natural grey.
Grey blending uses a combination of carefully placed highlights, lowlights and toning techniques to soften the contrast between your existing colour and your natural regrowth.
Rather than leaving you with a harsh line of roots, it creates a much more natural, lived-in look that grows out beautifully and often means fewer trips to the salon.
If you're considering grey blending, my biggest piece of advice is to do your research. Look for a stylist who regularly shares their work, has experience with colour transitions and can show you before-and-after photographs of real clients. A consultation before committing to the process is invaluable, as everyone's starting point and desired result will be different.
One stylist whose work I genuinely enjoy following is Rami Jabali.
His grey blending transformations, which he regularly shares on TikTok, demonstrate just how flattering and sophisticated silver hair can look when the transition is carried out with skill and care. They also show that embracing your grey doesn't mean giving up on beautiful, healthy-looking hair.
Before You Book Your Next Hair Appointment
Hopefully this guide has given you plenty of inspiration, but before you head to the salon, here are a few things I'd encourage you to think about.
✔ Save inspiration photos
Take two or three images of hairstyles you genuinely love. They give your hairdresser a much clearer understanding of the look you're hoping to achieve.
✔ Be honest about your routine
If you rarely use a hairdryer or don't enjoy styling your hair every morning, say so. There's no point choosing a cut that only looks good after 30 minutes with a round brush.
✔ Talk about menopause
Don't be afraid to mention that your hair has changed. Whether it's become finer, drier, curlier or you're noticing more shedding, it all helps your stylist recommend a cut that works with your hair today—not the hair you had ten years ago.
✔ Discuss colour and cut together
If you're thinking about growing out your grey or trying grey blending, plan your colour and haircut as one transformation rather than treating them as separate appointments.
✔ Think about the bigger picture
A great haircut can boost your confidence, but if your hair has changed dramatically, it's also worth considering factors like nutrition, sleep, stress and hormonal changes. Supporting your overall health is often just as important as choosing the right style.
There’s a style out there to match your lifestyle and mood!
Hair in midlife often behaves differently, so it’s worth paying attention to both the cut and the care.
For styling inspiration, I love some of the tutorials from Michael Douglas London, especially his approach to modern cuts for women over 50.
Ultimately, your hairstyle is an extension of you! It should make you feel vibrant and authentic.
So why not book that appointment, bring along a few screenshots, and try something new?
You might just find your signature midlife look.
